The PhD programme in Biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology and biotechnology is conducted in Polish, however there are classes offered also in English. It lasts for 8 semesters and the number of ECTS credits assigned to the programme is at least 40. The programme offers courses developing professional and didactic skills as well as general knowledge. The vast majority of classes are optional. Doctoral students are also obliged to undergo a period of professional practice in the form of teaching classes for students. A detailed PhD study programme can be obtained below. 

 
However, the main part of the teaching programme in Biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology and biotechnology, especially in higher years, is scientific-research work which is carried out at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology. Research conducted at the Faculty includes contemporary biochemical, biophysical and biotechnological aspects of biological objects ranging from the molecular level through the cellular and up to the level of whole animal and plant organisms. Doctoral students have the opportunity to take part in interesting scientific projects on a variety of subjects, including issues such as:
 
  • Molecular bases and mechanisms of the formation of various diseases and their therapies, including:
    • oxidative stress; inflammation; DNA damage and repair;
    • cancer; atherosclerosis; myocardial infarction; periodontosis; autoimmune diseases; pathogen-host interaction (bacteria, fungi, viruses)
    • transport of drugs; phototherapy; stem cells; tissue engineering; aptamers and antibodies
  • Bio-energy - among other things, research on energy and electron transfer mechanisms in photosynthesis
  • Biological membranes - physicochemical properties of membranes, domain structure, properties of lipids and membrane proteins
  • Transcription factors and gene expression
  • Cellular signalling
  • Plant physiology - photobiology, phytoremediation,
  • Biologically important molecules such as GD2 ganglioside; peptides; carotenoids; MCPIP1; GPCR; miRNA
  • Bioinformatics and molecular modelling
 
The Faculty offers modern research infrastructure. High-class scientific equipment which is at your disposal, will enable you to use the following techniques in your research:
  • electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging using several commercial and home-made pulse and CW 1-36 GHz spectrometers,
  • advanced physical biochemistry techniques: isothermal titration calorimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, circular dichroism, stopped-flow fluorescence spectroscopy, time-resolved and steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence anisotropy,
  • mass spectrometry
  • flash photolysis
  • peptide and protein sequencing
  • modern functional genomics approaches based on gene knock-out (KO), conditional gene knock-out (cKO) and transgenic animal/cell model
  • fluorescence confocal microscopy, and the latest methods of high resolution microscopy, atomic force microscopy
  • Cell Bank with the authorization for harvesting, processing, storing and distribution of several types of human cells for clinical application
  • cell and tissue cultures, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, high-speed wide field live-cell imaging 
  • molecular modelling at the atomic level using own high performance computer clusters and the High Performance Computers at the Academic Computer Centre CYFRONET,
The Faculty carries out approximately 80 research projects. Participation in them offers an opportunity to co-author publications in renowned scientific journals with a global reach.

Every year a few PhD students at the Faculty are also awarded grants for young scientists offered by NCN (National Science Centre).
 
The Faculty hosts lectures and seminars delivered by outstanding specialists, including visiting professors from well-known foreign research centres. The Faculty also conducts fruitful scientific cooperation with more than eighty academic centres from Poland and the entire world.
 
The Faculty offers a partnership between doctoral students and academics as well as a very friendly Ph.D. student administration office.
