The role of environmental factors in maintaining adaptive pace-of-life variation in a mammal holobiont: an experimental evolution approach

Pursuant to § 3 section 11 and § 7 sections 1 and 3 of Resolution No. 5/I/2020 of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University of 29 January 2020 on: the rules of recruitment for the Doctoral School of the Sciences and Life Sciences at the Jagiellonian University in the academic year 2020/2021, the Director of the Doctoral School of the Sciences and Life Sciences announces a competition as part of the PhD Programme in Biology study programme for one doctoral student with a scholarship financed from the research project funds.

As part of the NCN Opus 16 project  „The role of environmental factors in maintaining adaptive pace-of-life variation in a mammal holobiont: an experimental evolution approach”, a commission set up at the School will conduct recruitment for the teaching programme of Biomedical Sciences in the academic year 2020/21. The project manager, prof. dr hab. Paweł Koteja and Anni Hämäläinen offers an opportunity to complete a doctorate in the area mentioned above.

The schedule of the current competition is as follows:

  1. Opening of the competition: 24.07.2020
  2. Application submission deadline: 13.09.2020
  3. Entrance exams: starting from 7.09.2020
  4. Announcement of results: no later than 30.09.2020
  5. Enrolment: 30.09.2020

Preliminary enquiries: email to the principal investigator and the prospective PhD school supervisor, Paweł Koteja (pawel.koteja@uj.edu.pl).

The formal application should be sent by email to the above address and to the PhD School secretary (anna.stec@uj.edu.pl) by 13.09.2020, and should include:

1) A Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages) including information on relevant academic achievements, publications, awards, and relevant experience and training. This document should also include identification information (PESEL number for candidates from Poland, or passport number for candidates from abroad).

2) A motivation letter (maximum 2 pages), explaining how the applicant’s background and research interests make them a suitable candidate for the position.

3) A scan of MSc diploma, or a certificate informing that the degree has been already obtained, or a letter from supervisor confirming that the MSc thesis is completed and the defense or final exams are scheduled on or before 16 September 2020.

4) Transcript of grades: diploma supplement, or the official transcript of grades, or another document listing completed courses and grades. Information about grading scale must be included.

5) Two reference letters from recognized scientists who have a first-hand knowledge of the applicant’s skills and past research experience.

6) Documents confirming the most important academic achievements declared in CV, particularly pdfs of publications.

7) A signed copy of a formal statement concerning the processing of personal data, available here: https://cawp.uj.edu.pl/en_GB/wynagrodzenia/stypendia (or on request from PI).

As a rule, the documents must be in English, with the exception of the copy of MSc diploma (#3), and the statement concerning personal data (#7), which can be in Polish. Diplomas and transcript of grades issued in other languages must be accompanied by certified translations to English or Polish.

Documents required for enrolment (successful applicant only):

  1. recommendation of a researcher holding the academic title of professor or the academic degree of habilitated doctor employed in the unit where the educational program is carried out about the possibility of undertaking scientific cooperation in a specific scope in the event of admission to this program of education to the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences;
  2. photocopy and the original for inspection:
  3. a diploma certifying the award of MSc degree in Chemistry, or
  4. a document confirming completion of studies abroad, giving the right to take up studies in the country of its issue in order to obtain PhD or recognised as equivalent to the relevant Polish diploma confirming graduate qualifications;
  5. a 35 mm × 45 mm photograph without a headgear on a light background;
  6. for inspection: identity card (passport in case of foreigners);
  7. the originals of all other documents provided at the application stage in the form of a scan.

If the candidate has not yet been issued the paper copy of the diploma by the day of the enrolment, they may substitute this document with a certificate of graduation. In such case candidate must oblige themselves to submit the document of the diploma to the School by the date set by the School.

Higher education diplomas obtained abroad should:

  1. bear the apostille clause if the issuing country is covered by the Convention abolishing the requirement of legalisation for foreign public documents, done at The Hague on 5 October 1961. (Journal of Laws of 2005 No. 112, item 938) or
  2. be legalised, in other cases.

Each document issued in a language other than Polish or English shall be accompanied by a certified translation into Polish or English.
