Mechanisms of induction of DNA damage and repair in mammalian oocytes and somatic cells. (Supervisor: prof. dr hab. Jerzy Dobrucki)

Mechanisms of induction of DNA damage and repair in mammalian oocytes and somatic cells. (Supervisor: prof. dr hab. Jerzy Dobrucki)

Announcement

Pursuant to § 7 sections 1 and 3 of Resolution No. 5/I/2020 of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University of 29 January 2020 on: the rules of recruitment for the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences at the Jagiellonian University in the academic year 2020/2021, the Director of the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences announces a competition for one doctoral student with a scholarship financed by the project awarded by National Science Center (NCN), within a programme in Biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology.

Within the NCN-funded project entitled Genome stability in mammalian oocytes and somatic cells, a commission set up at the School will conduct recruitment for the PhD study programme in Biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology, in the academic year 2021/22.

A position for a PhD candidate is open for a highly motivated person to join our research group at Department of Cell Biophysics, Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. The successful candidate will participate in a project which is focused on mechanisms of DNA damage induction and repair in mammalian oocytes and somatic cells. Cell biology and biophysical techniques will be used, including fluorescence confocal and super-resolution imaging, and various methods of detection of DNA damage and repair.

The overall goal of the proposal is to improve our understanding of the mechanisms behind a lower mutation rate of the female germline in comparison with somatic cells. The planned research involves direct measurements the numbers of endogenous single-strand DNA breaks (STRIDE technique, Nucl. Acids Res. 2020), measurements and imaging of localisation of critical SSB repair factors in oocytes and somatic cells, assessing the capacity of oocytes and zygotes to repair SSBs, and measurements of abundance of repair components and assessing their role in conferring resistance to DNA damage.

The principal investigator, prof. dr hab. Jerzy Dobrucki offers an opportunity to complete the doctorates in the following area (title): Mechanisms of induction of DNA damage and repair  in mammalian oocytes and somatic cells.

After the interviews and the evaluation of the candidates, the Chairman of the committee will present a report to the Director, containing a name of a candidate recommended for admission to the School.

Those who are interested are encouraged to contact the Principal Investigator (jerzy.dobrucki@uj.edu.pl) regarding further details about planned research activities.

Schedule of the competition:

  1. Opening of the competition (beginning of entering declarations in IRK): 7th March 2022
  2. Application submission deadline (end of entering declarations in IRK: 26th May 2022
  3. Entrance exams: 2nd June 2022
  4. Announcement of results: 13th June 2022
  5. Enrollment: 14 th -28th June 2022

Detailed terms and procedures of admission are tailored to the specific PhD study programme according to the current Recruitment rules for the specific academic year (the School Secretariat provides the content).

Insurance:

Each doctoral student, including a foreigner, admitted to the Doctoral School is covered by health insurance, provided that he/she is not covered by such insurance on other grounds (e.g. employment relationship, contract of mandate, business activity, insured as a family member under 26 years of age, as the spouse of an insured person). The health insurance contribution is paid by the Jagiellonian University and is financed from the State budget. In addition, a doctoral student receiving a doctoral scholarship is covered by retirement and disability insurance and accident insurance.

IMPORTANT:

A person admitted to the doctoral school begin education and acquire doctoral student rights upon taking the oath. The Department of Personal Affairs signs up each doctoral student admitted to the School to health and social insurance scheme at the commencement of education. Until that time foreign candidates are obliged to cover the costs of insurance for the time of travel, treatment, etc. individually.
