In recent years we have witnessed the incredible development of gravitational wave astronomy. The first source, a binary consisting of two black holes, was detected in 2015 and it brought a revolution in astrophysics. Following years brought additional discoveries, like merging neutron stars, alerted almost the entire world of astronomy. In my lecture, I will summarize these discoveries, present the basics of gravitational wave detection techniques, as well as the technological challenges that it faces. I will also present the basic physical picture that allows drawing conclusions about the nature of observed systems based on simple information contained in the time series of the observed gravitational wave signal.
