Recruitment 2020/2021 – Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, and Biotechnology

Doctorate at the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University, within the Doctoral School

The Faculty is not only part of the Jagiellonian University, the oldest and in many respects the best Polish university, but also has its own achievements - the highest A+category obtained twice, and in the years 2014-2018 the status of a National Scientific Leadership Centre (KNOW). The Department also conducts fruitful scientific cooperation with more than eighty academic centres from Poland and the entire world. Educating doctoral students at the Faculty has a long tradition. The subject matter of doctoral theses is determined by scientific research conducted at our Department, and the participation of doctoral students in this research is extremely important for us.

Doctoral students have the opportunity to carry out interesting scientific projects on a variety of subjects, including issues such as:

Molecular bases and mechanisms of the formation of various diseases and their therapies:

  • oxidative stress; inflammation; DNA damage and repair;
  • cancer; atherosclerosis; myocardial infarction; periodontosis; autoimmune diseases; pathogen-host interaction (bacteria, fungi, viruses)
  • transport of drugs; phototherapy; stem cells; tissue engineering; aptamers and antibodies

Bio-energy - among other things, research into energy and electron transfer mechanisms in photosynthesis

Biological membranes - physicochemical properties of membranes, domain structure, properties of lipids and membrane proteins

Transcription factors and gene expression

Cellular signalling

Plant physiology - photobiology, phytoremediation,

Biologically important molecules such as GD2 ganglioside; peptides; carotenoids; MCPIP1; GPCR; miRNA

Bioinformatics research and molecular modelling

High-class, modern, specialist scientific equipment is at your disposal, which enables you to research, among others, with the following techniques:

  • spectroscopy (paramagnetic electron resonance; fluorescence; circular dichroism; masses)
  • peptide and protein sequencing
  • microcalorimetry
  • confocal microscopy, atomic forces
  • flow cytometry
  • flash photolysis

The Department carries out approximately 80 research projects. Participation in them offers an opportunity to co-author publications in renowned scientific journals with a global reach:
