List of potential PhD advisors [MCB]

PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences is a programme at the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences the Jagiellonian University in Krakow with a strong inter-disciplinary, international inter-sectoral research and training dimension.

We will recruit early stage researchers (ESRs) in an open call, targeting the most talented and motivated ESRs in the fields of Biological and Medical Sciences. The recruitment process will adhere to the guidelines set in the code of conduct for the recruitment of researchers and the European charter for researchers, ensuring transparency of the recruitment process based on the merit and skills of applicants. The recruitment process will not discriminate applicants based on their personal features.
Training will be focused on the interest and expertise of researchers working at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB), Jagiellonian Centre for Experimental Therapeutics (JCET) and National Synchrotron Radiation Centre (SOLARIS).
The program covers various areas of biology:

  • synthetic,
  • structural,
  • molecular,
  • cellular,
  • developmental

and utilizes plants, viruses, bacteria, invertebrates and vertebrates.
The program is also linked to interdisciplinary studies in endothelial biomedicine. 

Our Students offered a place in our PhD programme will obtain a full scholarship funded by the Polish government regardless of nationality.
The applicants are free to choose the research topic and supervisors from the focus areas based on their personal interests and qualifications. We encourage our students to get involved in the broad range of scientific activities of MCB, JCET and Solaris research groups. It is also an excellent opportunity to learn to think across disciplines and build up initial collaborations and cross-disciplinary skill sets.
The programme is run in English, either in a six-semester or in an eight-semester system.
During their studies, our students are expected to attend training courses in transferable and general research skills, participate in the students' and outreach activities, present their work regularly and attend seminars.

Pursuant to § 7 sections 1 and 3 of Resolution No. 5/I/2020 of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University of 29 January 2020 on the rules of recruitment for the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences at the Jagiellonian University in the academic year 2020/2021, the Director of the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences announces a competition for 1 doctoral student with a scholarship financed from the research project funds biological sciences as part of the PhD study programme Biomedical Sciences.
 
Within the Weave-UNISONO funded project entitle “Aging-associated, specific pathomechanisms of endothelial dysfunction in sepsis: pathway analysis and experimental therapy” a commission set up at the School will conduct recruitment for the PhD study programme Biomedical Sciences in the academic year 2022/23.
 
The project manager Prof. dr hab. Stefan Chłopicki offers an opportunity to complete the doctorates in the following area: biological sciences.
 
After the interviews and the evaluation of the candidates, the Chairman of the committee presents a report to the Director containing a list of candidates recommended for admission to the school as part of the research project.

Project description:

Endothelial dysfunction importantly contributes to pathophysiology of sepsis and recent studies provide key evidence that pro-inflammatory stimuli and oxidative stressors induce a significantly more severe degree of endothelial dysfunction in blood vessels of aged rats and mice, when compared to the responses in young animals [1,2]. Still, there are no studies specifically focusing on the mechanisms underlying the sepsis-associated impairment of endothelial function in aging animals. This topic represent an important challenge in medicine given the fact that as yet there are no effective pharmacological approaches for the therapy of circulatory shock and multiorgan failure of sepsis.
 The central hypotheses of the project that seeks for a talented PhD student are that (1) accelerated endothelial dysfunction is a key contributor to multiple organ failure and mortality in aging animals during sepsis and (2) in aging blood vessels, unique cellular and molecular mechanisms operate that render them extremely vulnerable to the oxidative stress-associated endothelial dysfunction during sepsis. In the frame of the project we will try to identify unique pathophysiological patterns and will yield potentially targetable novel pathways that are selectively perturbed in the aged vasculature in response to sepsis. The potential target will include Nrf2 (a master regulatory factor of the antioxidant response) nuclear enzyme PARP, telomere loss age-associated down-regulation of circulating IGF1 levels, age-dependent changes in endothelial and vascular metabolism and others. This interdisciplinary project encompassing in vivo work and vascular and cellular studies, should shed light on the pharmacotherapeutic mechanisms of age-associated worsening of endothelial dysfunction in sepsis. The research is carried out in the frame of Weave-UNISONO grant and international collaboration.

Documents required for enrollment:

  • the original application and a photograph;
  • a photocopy and the original for inspection:
    a. a diploma certifying the holding of a degree of Master, Master Engineer or equivalent in a field of study from among those indicated in the detailed conditions of recruitment, or
    b. a diploma of completion of studies abroad, giving the right to enrol in a course of doctoral  studies in the issuing country or recognised as equivalent to the appropriate Polish diploma confirming the qualifications of the second degree;
  • if the candidate has not yet been issued such a diploma by the deadline for admission,
  • he/she shall submit a certificate of completion of such studies and a written undertaking to provide the diploma of higher education entitling to enrol in a course of doctoral studies within the prescribed deadline;
  • for inspection: identity document (passport in case of foreigners);
  • originals of all other documents provided at the registration stage in the form of a scan.
In the event of exposure to harmful, noxious or hazardous factors, the applicant will, at the time of registration, be referred for a medical examination by an occupational medicine physician. The candidate shall be obliged to deliver, within the time limit set by the programme manager, a medical certificate confirming the absence of contraindications to take up education.

Higher education diplomas awarded abroad should:

  1. bear an apostille clause if the issuing country is covered by the Convention abolishing the requirement legalisation for foreign public documents, done at The Hague on 5 October 1961 (Journal of Laws of 2005, No. 112, item 938) or
  2. be subjected to legalisation, in other cases.
Any document submitted in a language other than Polish or English must be accompanied by a certified translation into Polish or English.

Insurance:

Each doctoral student, including a foreigner, admitted to the doctoral school is obligatorily subject to health insurance if he/she is not covered by such insurance on other grounds (e.g. employment relationship, contract of mandate, business activity, insured as a family member under 26 years of age, as the spouse of an insured person). The health insurance contribution is paid by the Jagiellonian University and is financed from the State budget. In addition, a doctoral student receiving a doctoral scholarship is subject to compulsory retirement and disability insurance and accident insurance

IMPORTANT:

A person admitted to the doctoral school begins education and acquires doctoral student rights upon taking the oath. The Department of Personnel Affairs reports each doctoral student admitted to the School to compulsory health and social insurance at the commencement of education, i.e. from 1 October at the earliest. Until that time foreign candidates are obliged to cover the costs of insurance for the time of travel, treatment, etc. individually.
