The "Biology" PhD study programme prepares students for a doctoral degree in the discipline of biological sciences. More information about the programme can be found here. 
Doctoral dissertation topics are related to research in the fields of:
  • Botany, including: plant cytology, plant ecology, classical and experimental embryology, phytogeography, phytosociology, in vitro cultures of plant tissues and organs, lichenology, mycology, paleobotany, plant taxonomy
  • Environmental biology including: ecosystem research, biodiversity, evolutionary ecology, ecotoxicology, natural resources management Institute of Environmental Sciences - Faculty of Biology
  • Zoology and biomedical research, including anthropology, cell and tissue biology, reproductive and developmental biology, endocrinology, faunistics, genetics and speciation processes, neurobiology and immunology, hormone-dependent cancer, xenoestrogens and reproductive disorders
These areas offer numerous seminars, lectures and courses to choose from.
The PhD study programme offered lasts 8 semesters and provides the opportunity to achieve learning outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences as specified for the 8th level of the PQF (Polish Qualifications Framework).

SEL120, dual inhibitor of CDK8/CDK19 in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia: patients stratification and finding a partner for combination therapy (Implementation PhD)

Pursuant to § 7 sections 1 and 3 of Resolution No. 68/IX/2020 of the Senate of the Jagiellonian University of  30 September 2020 on: the rules of recruitment for the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences at the Jagiellonian University in the academic year 2020/2021, the Director of the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences announces a competition for 1 doctoral student/s with a scholarship financed from the research project (“Implementation PhD”) funds as part of the PhD study programme Biology.

The project manager, dr hab. Małgorzata Lenartowicz, prof. UJ offers an opportunity to complete the doctorates in the following area: "SEL120, dual inhibitor of CDK8/CDK19 in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia: patients stratification and finding a partner for combination therapy".

After the interviews and the evaluation of the candidates, the Chairman of the committee presents a report to the Director containing a list of candidates recommended for admission to the school as part of the research project.

Project description

Employer's declaration of employing a doctoral student

Candidate's profile:

  • Higher education (Master's degree in the field of Biotechnology)
  • Minimum three years of experience in a company from the biotechnology sector, in work related to cancer biology
  • The ability to plan research experiments on the analysis of human neoplasms
  • Experience in working with neoplasms of the hematopoietic system, especially in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), especially in designing and conducting in vitro experiments in a cell culture model (including primary) with the use of cyclin-dependent small molecule kinase inhibitors. Experience in working with human xenografts from patients
  • Practical knowledge of laboratory methods: flow cytometry, electrophoresis, Western blot, immunoprecipitation, CETSA, fractionation, ELISA, QPCR, cell culture management (cell lines, patient xenografts), cell viability tests, synergy tests, qPCR
  • Practical ability to search databases on the human genome and mutations, and the ability to analyze data obtained in transcriptomic reactions
  • Documented scientific achievements including publications and participation in scientific conferences
  • Knowledge of English at the minimum level of B
  • An additional advantage will be:
  • Practical ability to analyze synergy with the use of specialized programs: Combenefit and CompuSyn, equipment operation: BD LSR Fortessa flow cytometer (Diva software), Tecan D300 dispenser.
