27.01.2022 — Aleksandra Powierska (Jagiellonian University): Scientist in Social Media – Personal Branding and Popularisation of Science

<< Seminars 2021/2022

Abstract:

The growing popularity of social media in recent years has made it an important place to establish contacts and disseminate knowledge. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn are some of the most important websites used to popularise science. On the other hand, each of them gives scientists the chance not only to promote their research but also to establish contacts and exchange experiences. Thanks to specialised groups, these websites have become a valuable source of information about grants, scientific conferences or scholarships. In addition, many scientists make their analyses available for joint discussion by putting the ideas of wikinomics into practice.

During the seminar, the opportunities offered by Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn will be presented to scientists who want to build a network of connections and have access to international knowledge exchange groups. The issues of personal branding will also be discussed, i.e. taking care of the researcher's image in social media and the principles of creating professional accounts, which support scientific activity. Another topic addressed during the meeting will be activities disseminating the results of research, which is currently a requirement of most grants and scholarship programs. This issue will be discussed using the examples of the so-called good practices in the popularisation of science.

The seminar's recording will be published soon.
